Plea for CONTINUOUS development

This question has been haunting me for a while now: “Are you currently embarked in any learning activities?”. I am asking myself and all my close ones what is their development plan. I know, it may be considered personal.. but those who choose to answer, do answer and those that do not … do not!

Regardless of their preference, my opinion stands: it’s best to have a development plan — either personal either professional either both.

On a personal level I, for on, am struggling with brushing up my German. I’m consciously working on my Duolingo tree and my goal is to finish the tree at the end March next year (I started begging of this year). This feels quite ambitious but I truly hope to be able to accomplish it. Afterwards I have big plans that involve extra courses and a diploma.. hopefully.

In parallel, I want more. I want to read a few books on continuous development and soft-skills and here I have a few lined-up and I still feel like I want to do more…

I want to write.. so I do write (hope this sticks because it helps me get out there issues, fears, opinions etc) and try to reach people.

On the professional side I am still working on building a development plan. The approach CEO of your own career stuck and I am currently weighing my options… still a bit undecided whether to continue my ITIL journey upgrading to v4. I’ll keep you posted on my decisions and the arguments that support it.

Now, for the most valuable advise anyone can give you — never stop learning. Even when time is short, even when you lose the desire to do so. I know we are not in school anymore but take advantage of that — you can focus your energy on what you want not on what a person tells you to.

Choose an area and “Just do it” and even if you take breaks from what you do, constantly remind yourself why you chose that topic and just continue. Stubbornness in this area usually is a good thing.

What are your wishes in terms of learning new things?

As usual, feedback welcomed.
